They're sending me home today for a week. Then back in for another vascular procedure to try and reopen the vein.

Things are going okay, recovery wise. They've taken both chest tubes out and I'm off the narcotics. Drugs are bad, mkay. They also make you constipated which is not a good thing when you're on blood thinners.

Mostly bored now, and a bit down about the fact that they may not be able to fix the vein.

Scars!

Considering it was thoracic surgery, they're almost disappointing.

Stupid advances in medicine. 20 years ago you would have had an awesome scar right along your chest.

If he was I bet the damn thing didn't fucking shimmer in the sun. That long scar across the throat will make for a nice tall tale for the kiddies. Don't fuck with Mr Forbin kids. He took a knife to the throat and survived.

Apart from the fact that that's my armpit.

That's the holes from the chest tubes.

Yup, as you already know you went to the right place.

I trained at MGH and can vouch that nearly every attending physician that I met was quality (and most of the residents and fellows).

As far as things go, you would probably recanalize the vein on anticoagulation regardless of what they do in interventional radiology (IR). Although IR is amazing, there is little evidence in any one instance that what they do makes a large difference. [Then again, I'm in a field of medicine (not IR) with very little evidence for most of what I do everyday.]

All that being said, if it were me, I would want them to try to recanalize it under IR. Especially if you already have a significant burden of pulmonary emboli.

As to your post-op surgical site: that is amazingly small and a tribute to the CT surgeon that treated you. You could have had a much larger scar and been in the hospital much longer than you were.

Good luck and wish you the best.

P.S. And there is a reason that MGH also stands for Man's Greatest Hospital. But I'm only mostly biased :P

P.P.S. Correct me if I'm wrong, but that is an axillary scar (aka below the armpit), not the neck?

Edit: Forbin got to it first, yes it is axillary.

Hurray for me.

I'm posting from a hospital bed again after my forth procedure and they finally managed to reopen the vein.

Looks like I'm going to fully recover after all.

Talk about dodging a bullet.

Turns out that the vein on the other side is already starting to show damage too. So they're taking the rib out on the other side next month.
