Can I ask what technology he created? Because I'm not really aware of it. Mostly I know that he stuffed hard drives and lithium batteries into plastic and metal shells, put the same fucking shit OS he put on everything on it, then called it an iPod. Then he made it a phone. That seems to be mostly what people remember now, and that's not creating technology.

The best thing the guy ever did was be CEO of Pixar.

I'm not sure how exactly he changed the world. You know there were MP3 players before the iPod (I had two). You know there were smartphones before the iPhone (I had one). Then he regressed back to the iTouch, giving the world a...PDA :O (I owned several before the smartphone). There were tablets before the iPad (i had one). There were laptops before the macbook (I had several). I think Apple's next move will be to brilliantly combine a tablet with a laptop, so you can get the benefits of both (except I already owned a convertible laptop in 05)

Seems like he just brought stuff from the nerddom to the masses.

I probably should have worded that differently. He did not, obviously, do the engineering behind the original Mac, or even most of Apple's products. He was, however, the driving force behind product ideas, selection and design. His name is on an insane number of patents, primarily because he was involved at a deep level. None of Apple's product breakthroughs would have occurred without him.

So no, he didn't invent the smartphone, but he directed his company to drop the stylus and make the glass multi-touch. I used a lot of stylus-based Windows Mobile devices over the years. But once I had an iPhone in my hands, I never went back. Neither did the rest of the world. Much the same could be said for music players, laptops, tablet computers, etc. The entire computing world has shifted to focus on mobile tech -- not because of a Windows or Symbian smartphone, and not because of a Windows tablet, or a Sony laptop. It was Apple.

So call it what you will (innovation, creation, breakthrough, marketing, whatever) I'll reword my challenge: List your breakthrough innovations that resulted in fundamental shifts in how large percentages of the population interact with technology every day.

Its not your fault you have to follow him just like a religous deity. I will do a skimthat for you but here is a link to the full article Apple triggers 'religious' reaction in fans' brains, report says - CNN

For Apple fans, the brand triggers a reaction in the brain that's not unlike that of religious devotees, according to a BBC documentary series that cites neurological research.

The neuroscientists ran a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) test on an Apple fanatic and discovered that images of the technology company's gadgets lit up the same parts of the brain as images of a deity do for religious people, the report says.

That's just driving market trends, not advancing technology. He made products to sell people, and most of what he did was simply making products attractive to consumers. Why people have thought of his company so highly for just being a company has always been fairly inscrutable to me.

As a former fundamentalist Christian (for about 40 years) and as a current atheist, I'm pretty sensitive to anything that smacks of religious fervor. I also have to watch out for being an 'all-or-nothing' type of person, as that was what I was brainwashed to be from birth. Having said that, I really do like Apple products, but to suggest that all Apple fans are worshiping the products in a religious-like fashion is simply idiotic.

Here's an alternative viewpoint to consider: maybe we just like Apple products more than the alternative! Maybe we perceive the difference to be significant! For example, I used Windows Mobile for a few years. I didn't 'hate' it, but it was definitely frustrating. When I got my hands on my first iPhone, the difference was so significant that I immediately wanted one (but waited a year). It was night and day. That's not religion, that is recognizing a superior product.

Just FYI, I recently had someone give me a brief walkthrough of features on their Android phone. I was impressed! It seemed to have improved greatly from the first models, and I would definitely consider using one in the future. Hope that doesn't shatter your worldview...

Probably because it was the only company with enough skill and marketing to actually shift market trends repeatedly in the last 15 years.

Multitouch isn't a tech advance? Dropping 98% of the hard buttons? Dude, don't act like I never used cell phones before the iPhone came out. I know tech advances when I see 'em! iTunes, App Store, etc. All were major advances over existing tech.
