Though I think meds have a long way to go they definitely can and should play a role in the rewiring process. In addition to meds you need professionals, not quacks, helping you rethink, reanalyze and reprocess thoughts you have in your head.
Many of us have thoughts that are "givens." These are simple ideas that we depend on without having to rethink them. A good example is - used gum is sticky. You don't need to keep touching used gum to know it's sticky. While depressed a lot of our "given" thoughts are incorrectly assessed and need to be reanalyzed. Based on the original faulty assessments new thoughts are created and used to base new ideas on. The snowball effect continues till the final faulty idea that life is meaningless is created and the knife enters your wrist. Of course faulty "givens" aren't the only reason people are depressed but having someone help you reprocess them along with taking proper meds can go a long way to helping someone recover.
