Unreal Engine....Free???

Epic Games

Usually commercial game engines, like this one, are sold (I think leased is a better term) for a ton of money. But this one is just freely able to be downloaded....

I realize, but I didn't know about it, and I was hoping for discussion.

Check out the reddit thread:

Epic Games is giving away the full Unreal 3 engine SDK for free. The entire professional development framework is being offered for free to give users real tools for developing cutting edge games. : gaming

What do you want to discuss? I've used Ogre3d and raw OpenGL to do a lot of physics simulations.

Wrote a ray-tracer once as an undergrad...

Having access to a full-fledged, fancy-pants physics and particle system will be nice.

Unreal Engine 3 hasn't been fully opened up like this to everyone before. Until now, cost major cash to license, even for noncommercial games. The only way to run noncommercial games for free without this would be to make a mod for Unreal Tournament 3.

It's really impressive for someone to open an engine like this. I'd say Valve's Source engine should be next, but basically everyone owns Half-Life 2 at this point, so the fact that you have to mod it really isn't an issue.

it only JUST became free. and its also not really free...you can use it for free but if you actually make something and try to sell it, you have to pay Epic games full price for leasing it. and i believe the cost is 10K for a small release game

I don't care about licensing, just making shit with it is fun!
