What was the first 8-Track/Record/Tape/CD/MP3 you bought/were given/stole?

I was thinking about this the other day, and I realized that the first real music I had, that was mine, that was from OTHER than a garage sale... I stole.

It was DJ. Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince:Rock the House (Brand New Funk, Nightmare on My Street, etc.)

I was in some big box store like Tower, or something - and I saw it there, and decided "I need this, no one is going to buy it, so under my shirt and out the store I goes!"

I think I was 10 when I did this? And this was a cassette, in the HUGE PLASTIC PACKAGING. THAT WAS LOCKED. I don't know what I was thinking, I don't know how I figured I'd open it, I just wanted it, and that was all there was to it.

As I was going out the store, they caught me - and my wonderful sister, who is 7 years older than me, came to get me, and through her dashing intelligence, paid the man for the tape and off I went.

I fucking listened to that thing like it was going out of style.

Until I found the Milli Vanilli "Girl you Know It's True" album in the street, that still worked. <3 Oh, and the drama surrounding them? Milli Vanilli go crazy! Rob Pilatus died about 10 years ago due to a drug o/d, and apparently a movie is in production as of Feb last year, so it's probably been shelved.

I was beyond ghey when I was younger.

Then I started to grow up and at some point realized how cool Zeppelin was, and picked up IV from a garage sale. Fuckin' awesome.

What's your story?

when I was around 4, sister and I had a cassette player that had a microphone attached and our grandma would buy us blank tapes and we would record our own talk shows/songs/interviews. It was fun. I think I still have some tapes at my grandma's house, I have to look for them...

I had a cassette of Madonna's Like A Virgin album. I was like 8 or 9.
I remember my uncle asked me if I even knew what a virgin was. Of course I did I was smart ha, I told him it was someone who didn't eat meat. Vegetarian, Virgin. Close.

First ones I remember...

I remember buying MC Hammer - Please Hammer Don't Hurt 'Em when I was a kid. Probably was the first music I had purchased on my own.

I did steal as a kid but it was almost exclusively baseball cards or candy.

Early music I remember liking was shit. Wilson Phillips, Debbie Gibson, all that gay shit. Somewhere around 1991 or something I got back into metal and started buying Metallica Cassettes. Uncle made me a copy of KISS - Smashes, Thrashes and Hits as well as RUSH and Iron Maiden mix tapes. He also gave me his vinyls of Motley Crue - Shout At the Devil (with the black pentagram front), Theatre of Pain as well as Twisted Sister's - Come Out and Play. Yet somehow he was the black sheep of the family. Hmmpfh.

From there it was all sorts of shit. Ozzy Osbourne - No More Tears was the last cassette I ever bought. It's been CDs ever since starting with Dance Hall Crashers - Lockjaw & The Old Record, The Specials - Singles Collection & The Specials, Hildegard Von Bingen - Vision and re-purchasing all the Metallica albums.

Holy shit my sister and I did that too! I remember listening back to our mindless bullshit and laughing my head off. I haven't been able to find those tapes in 15-20 years.

In my house you only had two choices: My older sister was obsessed with what I refer to as the holy trinity of pop, Micheal Jackson, Prince and Madonna. And our older brother was a metal head. SInce I was scared to step foot in my brother's room due to all the Maiden posters of Eddie covering the walls I sided with my sister. My first cassette was either Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation or Madonna's self titled. I listened to stuff like that and En Vogue until I was about 12 (1992) and discovered Green Day (bought on cassette, then my first CD). It all went down hill from there

I still have Prince on vinyl and will still rock out to it. I don't care how faggy he dresses, that fucker can rock the guitar. He's the only person I can excuse from my grammar nazi ways. I mean "I Would Die 4 U" Prince? really? /sigh.

The first record I can remember is a disney LP of silly songs. I can still remember song lyrics when I hear them (same album is still around).

I can't say what the first one I picked out for myself was. I could still take you to where the record store was located in the local mall. They always had a display of top 20 singles on 45s. I remember really liking a copy of "Still Rock and Roll to Me", which was a single in 1980 (when I was only 7). That might have been the first one.

I think pretty much every kid had one of those orange fisher price suitcase record players in their room (I know I did and several friends did too). I never saw a kid with an 8-track payer

My allowance (for completing chore list) was paid in pop bottles that I would return to a store four blocks away with one of those red wagons. All of my cash went to 45s, 2600 cartridges, and comic books (I never missed MAD or Car-toons).
