HL2 has not aged well. The shooter genre has blown way past it. The whole game feels like a long string of boring AI, generic weapons, and an ENDLESS quest for more health/shield packs (I fucking hate the game for making TWO kinds of health packs I have to pick up).
It was great in 2004, back when physics was new and cool, but it's poo now. Other games have aged far, far better. Sid Meier's Pirates! is still an absolute blast. Episode 1 was better, but still boring. The beginning of Episode 2 really started to show some promise, but I got bored when they made me kill a bajillion antlions. |

Episode 1 is an improvement over Half-Life 2 but some parts feel over-extended. Episode 2 is terrific, especially the closing set-piece.
Not quite understanding the harsh criticism of HL2 above, I suspect it's mostly a reaction to how highly the game is generally held. I will say one thing for people who find the game dull: granted the weapons aren't outlandish but they allow you to interesting things by experimenting - especially the gravity gun. Some people harp on about the graphics but it's still spectacular and imaginative with it's environments and level design and I'd take it any day compared to bollocks like Gears of War. I mean, just look around! Personally, I felt that Half-Life 2 and it's Episodes were an impressive statement on the development in the last five or so years of the linear FPS. I find Valve to be a developer without peer, especially when you listen to those commentaries they did. Just wish they'd bloody work faster and release Episode 3.

There was a conversation on Rebel FM (if anyone here listens to that) recently about Half-Life 2's credentials as a shooter and I kind of take the side that claims the game just isn't that good of a shooter. As far as narrative and set pieces and overall immersion in the universe, I'm hard-pressed to find a game that compares with Half-Life 2. But I'm just not that into the shooting and I guess I'm just not as into throwing saw blades at zombies as some are. I think Portal makes much better use of the tools that Valve has at its disposal.

I feel it goes back to what Half Life has always done - taking shooters above merely shooting. |

Nope, it's a game that's pretty clear. If you didn't like the 1st, you won't like the 2nd. I still quite enjoy it. Horde mode best of all. Speaking of Horde mode, for anyone who kinda likes Left 4 Dead... Have you Horde? 'Survival' mode to make waves in Left 4 Dead - Joystiq /cleans underwear |

I loved Half Life 2 Ep1,2
But I could also understand the criticism when you compare it to Bioshock which blends in RPG elements and an unforgettable environment/story. Or when you compare it to Call of Duty 4 which fleshes a FPS into action packed adrenaline rush edge of your seat gameplay with great control and pacing. When compared to these two FPS (NOT even considering graphics at all) Half life 2 feel like twice its age. Again I enjoyed the game, but I did not hesitate to sell it once i completed all 3 campaigns. |

HL 1 - awesome, really sucked me in and it finally felt like a cinematic FPS representation. It wasn't a junker, brainless FPS game.
HL 2 - Not the same. There was something missing, even back then. Sure, it looked pretty, and there were some cool things/character interactions - but... I dunno. It was too vacant, empty and I wasn't huge on the immense human involvement, a twist that was okay, but not fantastic, in HL1 |
