I got bored halfway through Far Cry 2. But that's because Far Cry 2 is boring, not because open-world FPS won't work.

I just don't like them, I don't feel they work as well, other open world games that are FPS I can play through fine, I think its just the first person part I don't like, in oblivion for instance I usually went around 3rd person.

Maby it was just farcrys setting but the game didn't grab me or hold my attention, same for fallout, something about FPS open world games I just don't like. They just seem more stale to me, when I play an FPS I am looking for that quick pick up and play check point based game play with varied levels and set pieces, you cant get that out of an open world one in my opinion.

Another reason could be the realism, if I am playing in an open world I would much rather it be more magical rather than some island somewhere, I want epic battles, long dungeon crawls and some deep lore, and FPS game never really has that.

Basically what I feel is FPS should just stick to there pick up and play mission based game play and leave the open world stuff to the more fantasy based games, but again that is just my opinion.

I'm not saying they can only be good if they are super linear, its just how i feel they work best.

Never played Op flashpoint, didn't like fallout 3 and I got bored of farcry pretty fast after getting stuck, lost, shot at then bored.

Wow, you played Oblivion in third person? So... what's it like to play a great game from a horrendously broken perspective? Third person in that game made me nauseous.

I didn't mind it for the most part, made combat easier because you could see more around you, there were still some sections that were easier to use first person for but I spent a lot of the game in third person.

Never actually finished the game though, got too into doing all the side quests and stuff, I especially liked the dark hand quests.

I have a friend who plays the same way, to me the biggest problem with that is not the way it looks (mind you it looks TERRIBLE) is that it makes magic near impossible. To me magic was my favorite part of this game. That and potion making.

Frankly, it's unusable. The fact that the camera is inextricably tethered to the back of your character is just unforgivable.

I didn't use alot of magic, and if I really had to I briefly went into first person, same as I would for long range weapons.

3rd person magic wasn't that hard though i thought, you just kinda lined yourself up with them and fired, but who needed magic when you had a big ass sword anyway.
