I'm breezing through Silent Hill: Homecoming before I pick up Fallout 3. So far, I'm impressed by some aspects, but all-in-all the game doesn't feel very next-gen.
There are some nice combat sequences, but the animations in the cut scenes are pretty horrendous. I'm looking forward to Dead Space, but how will I have time for all these games? Fable's out too, so shit... |

I justed finished Portal: Still Alive, but I'm working my way through Fable 2 and Rock Band 2. Fable 2 doesn't disappoint at all...
PS - I know I'm a bit (a year?) behind, but that song at the end of Portal is extremely cool. |

I have a problem with all FPSes, Halo and Gears of War in particular because they are so wildly popular. Halo and Gears strive to be mediocre. They strive to be run of the mill. They do nothing to innovate the genre. These FPSes deteriorate what a game could be by shoveling the same shit down your throats over and over again. By buying these shit games you are just encouraging them to make more of it (just like hollywood action flicks).
I played Gears when it was called Doom. I played Halo when it was called Quake. I played Call of Duty when it was called Wolfenstein. It's the same damn thing in a prettier package. Half-Life 2 and to a similar extent, Portal, will always be in my mind the best FPS ever made until someone can prove me wrong. Ironically, it will be Valve to one-up themselves because no other company has the balls or creativity to do it. Half-Life 3 FTW I have made this post/argument so many times in so many forums to so many people. I should just save it on a notepad.txt. shoutouts: I <3 you, Standardman. |

[nitpick]Gears isn't an FPS[/nitpick] but I get your point. I'm less hard an Halo because at least it has some fucking colours, unlike 98% of all new games. |

Halo really changed the FPS were handled in terms of multiplayer, especially on the consoles. I don't believe the Halo games are praised as much as they are because of the single player modes, but the multiplayer (and the ability for just about anyone to pick a controller and compete with friends).
I'm not taking anything away from Half Life... but there's a reason that the Halo series is as popular as it is. It's not something for the FPS diehards. They aren't striving to innovate as much as have mass appeal... I think therein lies the difference between being a success PC title and a successful console title. PC = appeals to diehards. Console = appeal to the masses. |
