what makes me hate the movie avatar (i guess its kinda a spoiler)

So they are going to these retarded lengths to get that metal right? And this metal sells for some retarded amount of money back on earth, like 200 million dollars an ounce.

Who the fuck is buying all this? Where are they getting this extravagant amounts of cash? and what they fuck are they making with this stupidly expensive metal?

I imagine it will be explored a bit more in the sequels, but it boils down to a literary device to give reason for conflict.

What do you think a rock with anti-gravity built in might be worth here on Earth, anyway? I thought the price was cheap considering the expense of obtaining "Unobtainium". I think Mars and moon rocks, which have little or no practical value, sell for millions an ounce...

I don't know, I don't see your problem, maybe go into a bit more detail?

It's not hard sci-fi though Dylan, there's a good amount of fantasy in the vibe of that movie too, so details like that probably aren't any more than surface deep. Besides, by 2157 or wheneverthefuck it is you're looking at mega-inflation so when Giovani Ribisi says it's $5,000,000 for a few grams that's probably only $2,800 in today's money.

I would've thought out of all the below average things to hate about Avatar the economics of the future would've been down the list a way.

Haha, that's a pretty good analogy, except that Chemda latches onto Jesse's stories because even though he's hilarious he's not as good a story-teller as he thinks he is. Kind of like how even though Cameron knows how to make spectacular looking action films he's not the greatest story-teller ever.

I do so enjoy Chemda needling Jesse though, he's so fucking funny when he's exasperated.

I wonder if therte were people who discussed at length the inplausibility of physics in the Star Wars series in person, before the internet came out.

I'll have to quote my father, who tought of himself as an history buff, and once, in one of our sporadic meetings, saw an ad for "300" and said "What a bunch of hollywood bullshit. Spartans didnt look like a bunch of fags like that" (translated from italian and hazy memory, so forgive the evntual inaccuracy)

Let me first say I give the movie a 9.9 out of 10. But the unobtainium thing bothered me for different reasons. Gave me bad flashbacks of The Core.

Your old man is right about 300, motherfuckers look like a bunch of sissy dancers not warriors.

I dont like 300, and yeah it looks like a bunch of stylized gay pornstars spurting CGI blood but i dont think it was supposed to be historically accurate.

Also Frank Miller is a closeted gay racist, so that's how a movie based on his stuff looks.

Same can be said about almost all the movies that are box office hits... Directors/producers try to create a more and more visual representation of the events to keep people's attention... (we notice it more when it occurs in historical content) people are not used to a story anymore and just expect eye candy... One of the reasons i wont bother seeing Avatar... looks like a 2 hr long video game...
