Hmm. I havent seen Avatar so i wont ponder abouyt it, but i think its purpose it's the same of "Star Wars", "Star Trek" or "Lord Of The Rings", that is to create entertainment and an escape from reality for two hours. Dissecting the story or it's plausibility is a bit fruitless. It's a big toy, nothing more.

Note: My old man called everyone "fag", me include, so his perspective was slanted. Maybe i should watch 300 again.... Nah.

Exactly. It's not cost effective. They would never make their money back.

I know it doesn't make sense to point out flaws in a sci fi movie but the entire movie is based around them flying all that way to get this metal. Which they wouldnt do because they would never even break even.

When a movie cost 500 million dollars it should come with a script that doesn't have such a retarded plot hole.

As far as the inflation arguement that is countered by "if it cost barely anything to sell then they wouldnt go to such great lengths to get it."

Agreed, Lord of the Rings is pretty fucking lame.

The name unobtanium doesn't tell us what this mineral actually is, but the name implies it was previously impossible to find. In older sci-fi and intellectual exersizes, "unobtanium" was used to name a material that perfectly solved a problem (except that it doesn't exist yet or is impossible to get). Suppose this element is the key to a drug that stops aging as long as you take it daily. Scientists have figured out the whole recipe, but one of the required ingredients is only theoretical...until a planet is explored and found to have it. Can you imagine the price that would get today? Or what world leaders would do to get it?

Also, this is set so far in the future that humans have travelled to distant planets. Look backwards 100 years and tell people then they need to pay $200,000 for a house. The average annual income in 1910 was $574.

$20mil/kilo for the element is not crazy for the setting of the movie.

I never liked fantasy or Tolkien's Books but i really enjoyed the movies when they came out. My nerd friends pinpointed the flaws in the adaptation or the story, i just had a good time. Some scenes have a visual impact that still leaves me breathless on repeated viewing.

I enjoyed the books and the movies in a different way, the books were soo detailed that it would have taken 3 movies to cover 1 book. So overall the movies were a good adaptation and a nice way for non-Tolkien fans to be introduced to that world.

Historical accuracy doesn't matter to me as long as I get a charge out of the fight scenes. I mean, I know in every single movie I see it's not real fighting but a skilled director will create tension in that action and make you wince a little when the blows are landed. 300 had none of that visceral thrill, the supposed badasses just didn't come across like badasses.

What stops Avatar being in the same league as those other sci-fi or fantasy classics is that even though Avatar has 3D action it only has 2D characters. There's nobody in Avatar that's even half as entertaining as Han Solo or Captian Kirk or even that lovable, magical old homo Gandalf. Avatar will be remembered for it's technological achievement but in 10 years nobody will talk about it the way they do now about The Matrix or Aliens or Star Wars. It's just too fucking goofy.

Really? That's your gripe?

Numerous scenes in the movie were just like scenes from other movies.

Getting in the other clans and the big speech etc etc... Braveheart with blue people.

What do you think a rock with anti-gravity built in might be worth here on Earth, anyway? I thought the price was cheap considering the expense of obtaining "Unobtainium". I think Mars and moon rocks, which have little or no practical value, sell for millions an ounce...

I don't know, I don't see your problem, maybe go into a bit more detail?
I thought the anti gravity was due to the bowl that the rock was displayed on.
