Bang on, sir. I was forgetting the characters names whilst I was still watching it.

I saw the previews, so I expected the story to be shit, Dances With Wolves IN SPACE! I have told people to go see it in 3D, but don't bother without it. The star of this film is the 3D. There is no plot twist, and nothing happens that you don't see coming at least an hour before it happens. You know what he's going to choose to do, you know how he's going to unite the clans, you know what's going to happen with him and the chick, and you know how it's going to end, all LONG before it gets there. It's as predictable as a romantic comedy. This script was written by focus group study and statistical analysis of what had been done before.

I enjoyed the movie because I went in there expecting that. I was going to the theater for fun and to see the cool new special effects, not expecting some great story with unique plot twists.

I totally get what you are saying... and if it were GI Joe, i can understand not expecting a finely crafted story... (Although that movie did have a satisfying plot).

But why, if a movie is a technological masterpiece like everyone says, can they not also make it a great story with unique plot twists??? Since when have we simply accepted that these two things are now mutually exclusive?

Because when you put $500mil on the line, you aim for the lowest common denominator. There are FAR more dumb people than smart people (If you don't believe me, look at the political discussions on these very forums), and many of the smart people aren't watching it expecting an epic storyline.

Exactly! It's a groundbreaking technological leap - expect to see more and more movies made "just like it" but the plot is Dances With Wolves meets Fern Gully. I fully expected the answer to "how many are there?" to be "as many as there are stars in the sky".

Maybe.

I just connected it with the other floating rocks in the movie, didn't think it was much of a stretch. But there isn't enough information given to support anything but guesses at this point.

In the end, what gives the rock it's value matters little, it wasn't the story of Unobtainium, it was the story of, well, just about everything else. The rocks, though, weren't plot holes.

Dead on.

Half a billion dollar gamble, the future of 3D cinema, I wouldn't take risks with breaking new ground in storytelling, either(we all saw how movies like No Country for Old Men get reviewed by the public).

Let's all be honest, the story was good, really good. Finely crafted, honed, sharpened by the story having been told several times before with great success. We've all seen it before, at least if we are over our twenties.

There's nothing wrong with that.

But holy crap, imagine you had never seen Pocahontas or Dances with Wolves, imagine you are twelve again, not bitter about film, and this is one of your earliest cinema experiences!

How do you NOT crap your pants seeing it and how do you NOT laugh when your old fogey Dad tries to tell you how great Lethal Weapon was!

???

I'm assuming you were at a packed theater, seated maybe in the first one or two rows? Possibly you wear eyeglasses as well? Were you at an IMAX?

The only people I have heard complain about that at all are people shafted into the front rows, usually wearing eyeglasses.
