For example, remove unobtainium & just pretend that the King of the Human Universe wants to make his new castle where the Tree of Souls now stands. He doesn't have to explain himself, he's King of the Human Universe for crying out loud.
ROLL FILM!

It would make no difference & therefore is not purposeful to the film. I thought the name of it was stupid, but now it makes more sense reading some of these posts.

In the end, unobtainium was placed on the planet long ago by the Eywa, the mother Goddess, so that it could now be used as the catalyst for conflict. A conflict she needed to in order to unite the tribes & get some tribal cross-breeding going on (not to mention the bonus of the fresh introduction of human DNA). Do you know what happens when you isolate a small gene pool over along period of time? You get guys that look like this guy! :
They could have but they didn't. They made some material that no one could afford the catalyst for the whole movie. which is retarded.

It's happened throughout human history, it will continue to happen. The film was already long, throwing another 20 or 30 minutes to expound on economics of the time and detail the uses and reasons for the value of the material would push it up to 3 hours+ and take you away from both the story and characters, which violates rule numero uno in storytelling and editing.

So it's not retarded, it's just good editing.

Just out of curiosity, off the top of your head, can you tell me why platinum is so valuable? If you can't, do you consider that a bullshit plot hole in your life that makes you hate it, or are you primarily interested in the human elements of your own life?

It should be called the Mexican maid diet.

Nope and as such would refrain from devastating an entire civilization or traveling light years to go get some platinum.

Okay, but you said it was 'the story of Unobtanium'. My point is that since it is an entirely replaceable concept, including being able to exchange it with something vastly different (e.g. someone 'wants his castle built there') and still get to the same place, it seems a ridiculous piece to focus on as to why you "hate the movie".

So you "hated" it because they didn't explain what Unobtanium was. . .
From Wikipedia: "....unobtainium is a humorous concept for any extremely rare, costly, or physically impossible material needed to fulfill a given design for a given application."* Unobtanium is now explained. In fact, calling it Uobtanium actually very clearly says, "Hey, this thing is not the point of the movie, accept it for being silly & move on."

Are you upgraded to 'okay' with the film now? or is Cameron responsible for your lack of knowing what something was? If you didn't know what a Marine was, was he supposed to stop & explain why they are stereotyped for being arrogant, having, little regard for life, and have a win-at-any-cost mentality? or would you have simply been able to realize that the colonel guy was a jerkoff from way back and move on. (To be clear, I also didn't previously know what unobtainium was, but I also found it clearly irrelevant enough to move on & didn't hinge my entire like or dislike of the movie to it, as you have stated you have.)

*It should be mentioned that the Wikipedia entry barely mentions Avatar at all, and when it does, its only in passing. I only point this out so that it is understood that the entry isn't based around the movie, its based around Unobtanium and its past uses & references.

Not that it makes me want to watch it more, but apparently this thing is making obscene amounts of money and the jerks on imdb (that's what i think of the imdb voter, besides avatar being good or not) have placed it between the top movies of the decade.

Best/Worst "2000s" Titles

Hm. Now that's really too much.

Seems like you should have to have a minimum number of votes to be considered (200,000+ range?). I find it silly that you can be on that list with as little as 5700 votes.

In fact, with that logic, we (the KaTG fan base), should be able to raise "Crushed" (or is it She's Crushed?) to the same list -- just everyone give it 9.5 & Bam -- Top movie for the 2000's!

Love the movie. I need people to hate the things I love. Makes them even more enjoyable for me.

The rating system on IMDB is ridiculous. Most of the time movies get a high vote exactly the way you said. Most people start threads to get movies on the top 10 or even the bottom without even seeing them (it happened recently with the simpsons movie). Plus, it has been noted repeatedly how very low votes influence the average much more than positives.

Another creepy and significative thing that has been brought out is how a lot of movies with controversial subjects or all ethnic cast are being voted zero by prude or racist nutjobs. The issue has been brought up repeatedly on their forums and gives you an idea on how reliable the whole site is.
