Let me take a moment, again, to say how much I hate hate hate mysql for wasting hours of my time on this stupid problem. The error message had nothing to do with the actual problem which was that the returning record was too long. When I tried accessing part of the record at the end I get a totally unrelated error message which sends me on a wild goose chase.
