I've had two girlfriends in my life that I've really liked, one of them we had sex on our first date (if you define date loosely, no pun), but she was a cool chick and I was already interested, the sex was just the cherry on top (a fucking amazing cherry at that). So I guess I have to say it depends, but you're a cool chick yourself, so the odds should be in your favor.
As for "He got what he wanted," I'll never understand that. Hey guys of the world, if she fucks on the first date, she'll probably fuck on the 2nd, and 3rd, and 4th... Unless she gets weird or clingy (or smells bad), you might as well keep it going. If the guy has weird hang-ups about needing to have a chase, or feeling that he's dating a whore, better to find out sooner then later, and at the same time you'll find out if you're sexually compatible.
A little extra dating advice, how specific did this guy get about why he needed to cancel the date? The more specific, the better. And did he try to re-schedule then, or just say he'd call you later or whatever? Those are your clues as to whether he was blowing you off, or honestly had something else come up.
