I don't think a child should handle a gun without adult supervision. I got a BB rifle for my 12th birthday, my dad thought it would give me practice before I handled the real thing. I shot at a target in our garage several times and took it to my grandfathers farm to try to shoot birds. I'm 44 and have yet to go hunting or target shooting with a real gun. If kids were taught respect for guns then it might cut down on accidents.
