For the meat industry they raise both male and female chicken. They taste pretty much the same when they are killed young as meat birds are so it doesn't matter.
For the egg industry clearly only females are needed and the males are killed in a variety of gruesome ways immediately after hatching. Because the egg breed males are #useless and wouldn't grow into sellable meat.
Oh the joys of humans being assholes to animals.
There was a court case in Germany last year trying to make that practice illegal but it was shut down, they are looking into ways to determine sex before hatching to avoid that problem but the methods are apparently not widely (aka cheaply) available yet.
All of this reminds me of a past episode where Chemda and Hennessy tried to figure out whether chicken eggs are abortions.
