Most recent move experience was last summer, helping my daughter move home after she finished her degree at UCSD. I flew (Seattle to San Diego) and stayed in a hotel for 2 nights. Flight and hotel, at least $1,000.

She had her stuff mostly packed, so that was good. We spent a couple hours packing everything into her Subaru, leaving a seat open for her dog. (Of course there was a dog, you didn't think this would be easy, did you?)

The car was absolutely jammed full. Also had a roof bag full of bedding and clothes. No way to lock that, so security was a concern overnight.

We set out early the next morning. Hit LA traffic around 9am. Just kill me. Over 2 hours to clear LA. Made good time after that.

Multiple rest stops for gas, food, dog potty breaks, etc. Rolled into Grants Pass, OR at about 10:30pm. Quick overnight at a motel, worried all night about her stuff in the car. Pretty easy to break a window.

Up early the second day and on the road again. Rolled in to Seattle around 3pm.

It was a great bonding time with my daughter. Dog was better behaved than I was. Not anything I ever want to do again.

Airfare, lodging, food, gas, at least $2,263.

~1,300 miles, 21 hours of driving. Hiring a mover is the right way to go!
