I don't think the actors are to be blamed, initially, but The Simpsons has been on air for 34 years. Hank Azaria couldn't think about it over that time, possibly look into the characters he's been portraying, grow as a person, and bring up that it may be a problematic character? Maybe he did...but it only seems like a big deal to him/them now because Hari called out everyone on the show.
Edit: Trey had some strange viewpoints in this episode too. Nevertheless, I enjoyed listening to it. Last edited by thirteen; 05-02-2023 at 07:54 AM. |

Extremely surprised by the viewpoints of Chemda and Trey about Apu. Hank Azaria is not a powerless actor working for day rates trying to get commercial gigs. I don’t think anyone is critiquing 25-year-old Hank Azaria for accepting the Simpsons job. But after you’ve made $10million++++ from a role you’ve now become at least partially responsible for the consequences of continuing that role.
If he has enough money to not have to work for multiple lifetimes and he knows that continuing to voice Apu is causing people harm then it’s his responsibility to refuse. And Keith is correct about the level of ‘regret’. There’s lots of things I’ve done that I regret, but I didn’t know better back then so I don’t beat myself up about it and just try to do better now. Great episode overall

Chemda having the biggest "Sorry your 40" moment of the year so far might be the biggest surprise of 2023. If you can't see why Hank Azaria would be partially culpable and would feel regret for his racist portrayal of an Indian person then you need to keep your mouth shut until you educate yourself in the manner. very disappointing episode
