52 million downloads per month / 31 days per month / 24 hours per day / 60 minutes per hour / 60 seconds per minute = 19.41 downloads per second.

Assuming an average of 20 MB per show (random conservative guess, I believe most shows are shorter than katg), that's 19.41 downloads per second * 20 MB = 388.2 MegaBytes per second. Since bandwidth is measured in Megabits and not MegaBytes, that's 3,105.6 Megabits per second, or 3.1 Gigabits per second. That's the amount of bandwidth their Podcast PDN has to have to support that kind of traffic. In reality it would have to be even higher during peak hours.

For comparison, the Internet2 Land Speed Record Awards, the competition for fastest file transfers over an exclusive souped up version of the internet, lists the following world bandwidth record:

264,147 terabit-meters per second by a team consisting of members from the University of Tokyo, the WIDE project, and Chelsio Communication and other organizations by sending 2.98 terabytes of data across 30,000 kilometers of network over 45 minutes at an average rate of 8.80 gigabits per second.

Really Adam Curry? The Podshow PDN can sustain ongoing transfers 1/3 the speed of the world bandwidth record? Not only does that Tokyo team have the advantage of the Internet2 network and smarter programmers than Podshow has to set it up, but they also probably served one file that big. The PDN serving 19.41 files per second will have a lot more protocol overhead than they did. That's even more bandwidth that wasn't accounted for in the earlier calculations.

Adam Curry, you're too smart to out and out lie, but you're twisting the facts to mislead everyone. Fortunately, we're too smart to fall for it.

when i downloaded this show from itunes it was only 12 minutes long. that sucks. and 2 shows a go the show i downloaded was only 7 minutes long and everything was all cut off and shit. is it only me or have other people seen this?

if like me their itunes checks for new podcasts every hour, that is

72,000 podcast download requests, per HOUR

1,728,000 podcast download requests, per DAY

53,568,000 podcast download requests, per MONTH

so if you have 52 million podcast download requests... you can do the math in reverse or just do the logic... that means

LESS than 12,000 subscribers!!!
