I dabble in chess, was never a great player but it was fun none the less, a good way to spend an hour or so.
I'm sure there's some kind of online free thing, if there was a chess club I would play. |

I was a chess nerd- though nerd's probably the wrong descriptor.
Sophomore and Senior year of high school - park near where I live, used to have those concrete chess tables and a core group of us used to hang out at night til the sun rose, trash talking and playing the night away. In college I wound up being chess club president. I sucked at being the president - I was more interested in who was chipping in for beer than keeping the ranking. Those were good times. We'd have all-night tournaments against other schools. This was back when the drinking age was 18 and every campus had a bar - by four in the morning no-one cared who won (not that anyone cared to begin with). We'd play Bughouse chess where teams would face each other and when you'd capture your opponents piece, you'd shout it out and someone on your team would claim it and plop it on the board. I used to read chess books galore and still don't know the Algebraic notation - I'm a pK4 dude. At times I was so into it, I would dream games. PBS used to broadcast matches. I would watch them with the intent of any sports fan. I stared seeing life analogies in chess, who was a knight, a pawn, a bishop, a rook... I sucked, btw. Worst player. Still am. You don't have to be a decent player to love the game. Haven't played a game in years. I still love it.
