e-mail/ip lookups
Some of you seem to be able to find out everything about people based on just emails and ip addresses. How do you do this? I've seen and used pay services for this kind of thing but sometimes they come back with no info, and that's after I've paid for the service. Is there a free way to do this?
ps-I've only ever used this for finding old friends and work purposes (which is what I'm trying now) |

Well maybe I'm creepy...
Right now I care because at work we got a bitchy email sent to our general contact address. It said they weren't sure they could be confident in our level of work because of a grammatical error on our website, and it came from some BS yahoo account. In some businesses you do deal with people with yahoo.com addresses, but not this, this should be/is coming from someone at a law firm. I think it was just someone being an asshole that we most likely already have done business with and had problems. |

On non-webmail emails, you can mine the IP address of the sender out of the metadata, which can then be used to get a city and location. if you have a name, find that city's public website and look up some of the stuff they have - sex offender lists, property lists, court records, etc. Also, the email address itself can be a great help. if you really need to, the forgotten password response questions can often be guessed, and, like jermey said, myspace and facebook have email lookups you can find them via. try google too. the paid services are almost always crap.

I don't support stalking, but you can parse the headers of the email, and try to see if the IP of the sender is embedded. A lot of mail servers strip this info.
When you find an IP addy, you can do a whois, nslookup, and traceroute to try to figure about where it originated. You can also google the IP address, and various permutations, sequentially replacing the right-most number. The whois might return provider info, and you can social engineer a message to technical support in an attempt to figure out more info. This is pretty much what those pay services do, unless you're paying for a PI.
