I'm sure there's a computer whizz somewhere on here that has it down to a fine art. I had a quick search then in between work stuff i'm doing but all i found was a forum on people bitching that's they had trouble too.

Tanks, Fellas! I'm downloading a free trial of AVG Internet Security. We'll see how that goes.

I use Norton Antivirus and it runs light but I've had problems with Norton Internet security. If you don't use all the features or reign some in, it runs okay on the machines I run. The one thing I don't like is 10-20 seconds of startup time it uses, but that is a flaw of most antiviral software. The one problem I've had with AVG is false positives once in a while, which never happens with Norton.

AVG is good, but I perfer ClamWin myself.

Symantec products are now all viruses themselves. Their shitty anti-virus (and other, useless products) install themselves so deep you can never 100% purge them. They wrap their tendrils around many other pieces of software too. Suddenly there will be a button in your browser, your word processor, Explorer. Every file you download gets a pop-up "This is clean and I'm annoying" and "Don't forget to pay for more of our shit".

They're spammy, they're destructive and they have, on occasion, been directly responsible for the whole computer to end up fucked.

I also like Adaware and Spybot.

No kidding. Here's one resource-whoring benchmark, from Coding Horror:

The corporate product isn't bad, it's the consumer version that is a horrible resource hog. Avoid Norton Internet Security at all costs.
