Jury Duty

I have to show up for jury selection at the county courthouse in a couple weeks, which I've never done before, so I was wondering what other people's experiences were like. I'm honestly a little curious to see what being on a jury would be like, but in actuality it wouldn't be good to miss work. Any real suggestions for how to get out of it? Any amusing stories?

I figure that I could just say I'm a fairly new employee at my company (year and a half), working for an hourly wage, and I couldn't afford to miss work. I don't think this would go over well, but I've thought about saying "I'm working towards a promotion, and I don't want my boss to think I'm so stupid I couldn't get out of jury duty."

I've asked my co-workers about what they think, but all I get is joke answers, atleast here I no I'll get funnier responses.

It's likely you won't get selected to a jury no matter what you say.

But if you want to be specific you can tell how your sister was killed by a cop and you don't trust cops. Or replace cops with robbers. It really doesn't matter. You're a young white guy and a wild card. Neither side wants you on their jury.

My ex got out of it by pretending one of the accused was a friend of his friend.

Try your best to not be neutral, pick a side. I just got out of a grand jury selection a week ago. The people that got picked have to be there 3-4 days a week for a period of 18 months, possibly 24. How the fuck are you supposed to be employed and do that shit?

So I should just be bias about anything that pertains to the case? How do you do that without being obvious? Or do they ask specific enough questions that being openly bias will be easy?

I don't know about this, if this happened in a few months, and I had the promotion I mentioned, I would be salaried, and missing work wouldn't really matter that much.

I've learned that oversharing can help you get dismissed. I was being questioned to be a potential juror on a worker's comp case, and I started talking about every little bang and gash I got while working, even if they were insignificant. It was enough to dismiss me. I've also seen that people who display extreme political views in one direction or another are not the best jurors. Gotta be careful if you're trying to get out of it because if you're not convincing enough, you'll end up stuck on the jury because one lawyer is too dumb to catch the act and the other thinks you're exactly what he wants.

In terms of work, doesn't your employer provide compensatory time off for jury service? It's required so it's not like you can be penalized for it.

I was supposed to show up for jury duty selection tomorrow but got out of it via a note from my Dr. explaining how I'm crazy. Not sure that will help you though...

Liz Lemon's advice might be helpful to you, though.

When they ask you your views, tell them you believe in Keith's Justice, and explain in detail. Guaranteed dismissal!
