Until you can point or explain a business model that can generate the revenues that the music industry relies on, they ain't gonna buy this argument.

You hear this argument over and over again - the comparison to VCRs and tape decks. VCRs and DVDs opened up a new revenue stream - video rental and sales. Same with tape players.

Is their reign over? Sure. No independent artist looking to have their music played by thousands need sign with them anymore. But if the independents want big $$$, they sign up and start selling DRMed music.

That said, I do believe there is money to be made giving away content. I've read books on line and have then gone out and bought them. I've also been known on occasion to hit the donate button . But most consumers wouldn't. They'll read the book on line for free or download the song for free and skip paying.

Let's look at something we all know and love: Show 300 (by the way, that dude who read the prayer was awesome!)

$5. Five bucks to support a cause. Five bucks for a non-DRM'ed show, and yet within a week some fucker put up a torrent and people were downloading it.. Last night I heard the torrent's still there.

If giving away your content for free insures good revenue, then that KATG donate button must not be working.

Napster charges now. Stuff like limewire is unreliable to the extreme, while programs where you pay claim to be better. Bam, revenue.

The problem is that the record companies take a huge %age of these online sales. The label makes out OK, but not the artist.

Music: If it's on iTunes, I'll pay 99 cents. If it's obscure (i.e. a strange song in a commercial or a soundtrack to a movie that never got released) I'll use Limewire, but I'll try to get some money via PayPal to the artist.
Movies: DVD's are cheap enough as is, and the quality of downloads is so poor, I can hardly watch it (I'm a stickler for film).
TV Shows: Again, iTunes has many shows. However, for certain shows that I don't get here, I will watch them on Youtube and then buy the DVD of it in the future.
Games: Don't even know how to bootleg them.

So it's not even enough to pay for your product? Jeez Louise guys, in a perfect world every time I heard a song I liked on the radio I would drive up to the artist's house and hand him $20, but the world isn't like that.

Music: Yeah I download, but if I like the music I will buy the CD (usually used) or go see the artist live.

Movies: No, welll....a few pornos maybe. I go to the movies a lot. One's I miss go in my Netflix cue. One's I really like I buy outright.

TV: Only if I miss something on Sci Fi channel (I'm also a browncoat BTW). I find there isn't much worth watching anymore. I am very proud to say I have never seen a single episode of American Idol.

Software: I have not and will NEVER buy a copy of windows OS. I've started looking at Linux Ubuntu. I may take the plunge with that distro on a laptop. I'll buy software for my desktop and Palm PDA if it's reasonably priced. F-Secure Internet Suite, Paint Shop Pro, Snapshot..ZLauncher for the Palm? OK. Windoze? ....never!

On a related topic: I'd like to take this opportunity to give my wireless service ,Verizon, a big fat middle finger for making it neccesary to learn how to hack my own phone to avoid being charged for every little wallpaper and ringtone I want to use with my Razr. Thank you soo much for making me further violate the DMCA, you toothless cocksuckers.....there.......i feel better now

Did you do a seem edit? I was thinking about it, but couldn't be bothered for my v710. There are a lot of options that my provider has disabled, though, so I should.

Try www.v710.org.

It will forward you to a different site that has a lot on phone hacking.
