If you lived in a democracy with an honest government, maybe you would feel different about this.

Technically, the government is the representative of the people, so the government is you. If you don't like what your government does, you have no-one but yourself to blame. You put them there.

You know what annoys me...people who rant about the government like it is some external thing that has nothing to do with them. Voter turn-out in my country: 90%. Voter turn-out in the US: somewhere around 50%.

Are you just to beaten down to care? VOTE dummies.

\end of rant

So clearly I wasn't talking to you then dummy.

Democracy only works properly if everyone votes. Otherwise it is not really a democracy. Especially when it is the poor/black/hispanic people not voting...

Awesome! I am glad you feel that way. Is the general feeling amongst youth of today? The ones you know, anyway?

I've been thinking about this. I agree that the ability of the people to engage in public discourse has been diminished, which has led to less public debate of issues. My experience of this forum is that most debates degenerate quickly into polemics about the evils of the left or right, rather than being about the issues and people's core values.

But I do think 50% voter turn-out is pretty poor. I think people are increasingly disconnected from politicians and their policies and actions. We need to remember that they are our servants, and that they are spending our money, and we have a right to make them accountable. Your constitution is founded on the belief that the rights of the state should not ride rough-shod over the rights of the people.

Phew, I feel much better.

the youth today doesn't care about the things that will directly affect them, and i don't understand that, how they could be so ignorant towards their future life

Because they have never lived without the things they have. They can't appreciate their life when they have never lived without their luxuries.

last time i checked, isn't the popular vote just about pointless?

i mean, it seems to be the electorial vote that decides the president, isn't it?
