here's the thing about the islamaphobia: i know the ranting Facebook rednecks aren't the world's biggest problem, but they're the problem in my back yard. we have a bunch of disenfranchised youths running around having grown up bathed in Fox News rhetoric feeling very personally put upon by the rightful justice rage against systems and institutions that by happenstance of their genetics make them part of an oppressive class. couple that with the loss of Boomer prosperity in a time where this generations ability to do well has empirically diminished underneath a hard driven Patriotic American Capitalist narrative of endless growth on finite resources. sprinkle with this particular region's history of poverty, staunch conservatism, religious zeal, isolationism, war/gun fetishism and the veteran population.

all that pent up frustration has been given a couple of brown faces to look at: Mexicans and Muslims.

it's a powder keg full of short fuses. it will blow a gasket at some point and people are going to look at us and ask us why we didn't do anything about it. stuff like this creeps up slowly and then it's there. these are my people and i feel a responsibility to keep us from hurting others and embarrassing ourselves as much as possible.

i'm just trying to avoid having to hide people in my attic.

Unfortunately (and I haven't finished the episode yet so no clue if Tim mentions it) this goes both directions.

Not just poor Americans hating "Others" but also the poor minority hating the majority.
From what it looks like at the moment all of the attackers were EU citizens from France or Belgium. Meaning they grew up in the country but didn't participate in its economic success and I would assume were discriminated against quite a bit. So its homegrown terrorists we have here and they happened to be Muslim so that's the group they decided to join to lash out.

In Germany angry youth joins right wing parties, in the past in Ireland they would join the IRA.

I deeply believe that while religion certainly doesn't help matters, the economy is what is really a problem. Happy people with good job opportunities don't start bombing buildings.
