Chemda was right when she said; "Maybe its not something for us to decide." Growing up dark skinned in America and in the West Indies (and I'm willing to bet any other part of the world) is strange because you are often marginalized by your own community and even family sometimes. Lighter complexions are sought after to the point where it is almost fetishized. To top it off if you pick a black celebrity at random and look at pictures of them before and after they became famous you'll usually notice they are a few shades lighter. Suggesting that once they make it into Hollywood there is often pressure to "lighten up". Its something not usually noticed by people outside of the black community but it does have a pernicious effect on the subconscious especially on children; "Dark skin is unattractive and unwanted." Nina Simone being hugely talented, successful and dark skinned is someone kids can look at and think; "Hmm being dark skinned isn't bad at all." Not to mention although Puerto Rican and Dominican heritage can be traced back to African roots, they usually don't identify themselves as black and in fact there is a lot of racism between the communities, so it comes off as even more of a slight. I doubt it was intentionally but a big faux pas none the less. It also just goes to show how little Hollywood understands the black community. Not something you want to highlight when making a movie about such a prolific black singer.

untactful and totally worthy of scrutiny for the decision to give dark skin and fuller lips to a person who can wash them away, while making a movie about a woman who fought and spoke against the shitty treatment she received as a dark skinned woman? Yes

Is the whole movie going to be judged on its face for that same short-sighted decision? Yuppers

A shitty thing we should still feel ok calling shitty without getting dragged into arguments of "you're racist for not thinking this" or "I'm tired of hearing about racism" or that usual thing that happens on the internet.

I think it falls under high protocol, MAYBE, because her "restraints" could have very well just his command that she stay there and gag on it until he returns. subs have been known to let themselves get hurt with out their dom meaning to hurt them, because they follow commands to the masochistic level. which is why drinking too much/drugs and bdsm are a bad combo; if you're gonna play with LITERAL fire you may get burned...or electricuted, or torn tendons, or hyperflexed joints, or cut off circulation, etc. being restrained with commands is a high protocol thing and its so hot. being restrained and treated like sexual furniture. its an objectification/punishment thing. and yeah, its super hot.

agreed on both points. its more disapointing than offensive. but having a "you're a racist!" attitude towards anyone who slips up, isn't fast enough to call out another's faux pas, makes a shitty remark....
if someone makes a racist comment its really hard to find the right words to make them question thier own behavior instead of making them feel attacked. the feeling of being attacked is what breeds this ignorance and xenophobia.
as a questioneer i question this binary way of thinking; if you either are or aren't a racist (or sexist or bigot, etc) then how will people ever stop?
isn't the us vs them philosophy kind of one of the roots of the problem.
