...because the 80's ROCKED!
I love this site:
http://www.retrojunk.com/ takes me back! I used to play my NES all day and night, loved the Neverending Story, thought Huey Lewis was a rock god, drank my hi-c from a box and froze it to make pop-cicles, wrote letters on my mechanical typewriter, built civilizations from lego blocks, would get up at dawn to watch cartoons all saturday morning, get my fill of voltron and duck tales after school, and catch sonic before school, wore mirrored sunglasses like tom cruise, listened to thirller on a vinyl 33 1/3rd, and was qbert crazy. I'm not afraid to sound off for the 80's like i've got a pair!

I had a Morrissey/Flock of Seagulls cut from Astor Place (#2 on the sides, long in the front - dyed a different color, short in the back) until I started cutting it myself. A lot of fucked up haircuts but I didn't care. Hit Danceteria, Limelight, Palladium, and the Tunnel. Used to be a nightly regular at Lucy's Surfeteria (I still have my Worm Shooter shirts) and then hit Augie's Jazz club afterwords. And when I say nightly, I mean nightly. I had a fucked up schedule - class in the morning, work in the evening, and Chinese food, bars and clubs after 1AM. I did most of my sleeping on the subways. I was so sleep deprived that when I slept I used to dream about sleeping.... Concerts galore- Flock of Seagulls, The Fixx, Stray Cats, The Police, Duran Duran, 10,000 Maniacs, Split Enzs, Styx (Dommo Arigato, mutherfucker!). Who the fuck remembers them all! Slow Gin Fizz, Long Island Ice Teas, Sex on the Beach, Budweiser (and a Bud poster in the dungeon apartment), Corona (What's a Corona? I had one in Daytona Beach), Uncle Steve's, The Villiage Voice back pages, Washington Square Park at 2 in the morning, buying my first CD, IBM-PC XTs, 300-baud BBSs, "I want my MTV" (Is that a pay channel or is it for free?), "Like a Virgin", Midnight Blue, Robin Byrd, leg warmers, Tower Records, Bleaker Bobs, Peculiar Pub, They Playboy Club (Wow! I'm an adult!), The Brat Pack, wine coolers, Chipwitchs, Perrier, jogging (Did you hear Jim Fixx died of a heart-attack!), WLIR 92.7!, rotary dial (I'm not paying fucking $2 for touch-tone), your ATM card only working at one bank, $0.10 pay phones (who the fuck had a cell phone then? No one!), 1AM Hockey at Sky-Rink on 33rd and 10th, cassette answering machines that you can't check remotely, The Smiths playing at The Pier but not going 'cause you'll catch them next time.... The drinking age used to be 18 and fuck! Man! $0.25 beers at the school bar! You could go from one school to the next. College has never been the same since they made it 21! Fuck. That was a long time ago. |

Jethro Tull too. Though all I can remember was some giant beach ball being tossed around the concert hall. The Peculiar Pub. One night I was brewing down Bleeker street street when we hit McDs before splitting up. I had my fill and then stuck a cheeseburger in my ratty old coat from Cheap Jacks (are they still around?). After we split up I stumbed into Peculiar Pub for a nightcap. I orderd some English shit and started a rap with the bartendress. Things were going well until I remembered the cheeseburger. Reaching into my pocket, Popeye Wimpy-style I pull out the burger, unwrap it, and begin to chow it down between swigs. And so ended my rap. Fuck it. The burger went well with the beer so I was happy. |

I loved the hulk and solid gold. I, too, woke up super early for cartoons Saturday morning. The colored bars would be on that early. And remember when they were actually cartoons, not little kiddie soaps, that came on Saturdays. And they only ended when it was time for Soul Train and/or Bandstand! |
