A Drunk, some kids, a Jehovah’s witness and a Muslim get on a bus……
On my way home from a day out with my family there is unfortunately on my bus ride home from the city centre usually some disturbance or another. This particular incident involved a drunk guy who started swearing at these young boys travelling on the bus because they were being the shitty little bastards that permeate society today.
There a woman was sitting near them at the back of the bus trying to stop the language both in use by the drunk and these unmonitored children who were all too aware that no-one is going to stop them. So 10 min into the 45 min bus ride these kids get off, the drunk starts questioning the problems with respect in the “kids of today” and how that the previous generations wouldn’t tolerate it. The woman still discussing the issue turns the topic about the kids behaviour around to his behaviour being drunk early in the afternoon. So now the woman suggests A.A. to the guy and he said he had tried and that he had “no choice when it comes to drinking” he continues arguing his case about his lack of free will when it comes to alcohol and never backs down, now the woman talks about how religion can help. Now the drunk guy (whilst clearly inebriated but not slurring) turns the tables and starts on a rant about religion and how evil it is, about how all religions are based on lies, religious differences caused wars etc. Now this woman that was trying if anything to calm the guy down or at least distract him from swearing at the rest of us passengers but when he started complaining about religion stopped talking to him and moved to the other end of the bus. The woman was more than capable of putting forth a rational counterpoint to his extreme views but as soon as it came to him disagreeing about her faith so walked away. Which started me thinking about counter arguments (not that I believe in any religion) to his polarised statements, about religion providing community etc. then a Muslim woman fully covered by a burqa and whilst he is finally getting of the bus about after about 30 mins notices the Muslim women sat at the front, and announces his opinions telling the Muslim women that they are oppressed and need to stand up for themselves all religion is evil. I was impressed that a drunk could coherently put up such an argument, surprised that the women wouldn’t defend her belief and all in all entertained on a usually dull ride home. |
