I like Gunners comics but in the back of my head I always have the stories he told me in NYC (he probably knows which one because it shocked me so much ..) so everything is just that much more disturbing

Yeah, that's what I'm getting at, anyone who's heard stories from soldiers who've seen combat knows a person can't go through that and not be affected somehow, so if they're normal they can't not have things in their head that are hard to put words to. Comics are one way that lets people in a little, and in that way I hope that there's a connection that matters, even if it's just a little bit, because those of us who've never been in armed ground combat should know about what these guys go through when they're serving their duty. Stories alone aren't the whole deal. Gunner's comics are entertaining and I crack up laughing at some of them, but they're also a quietly powerful insight.

You mean the thing with the hammer? I don't think I could put that into comic form.

Thanks, but I'm just drawing shitty comics. I know a lot of them come out really dark, but that's just what pops in my head. I'll try to do a batch without anyone dying.

That's the thing dude, what pops into your head is on a different level of understanding to what pops into a regular joe civilian head. And I'm not saying I know you better than you know yourself or anything Gunner, that'd just be stupid, and I sure as fuck don't want to turn this fun thread into some amateur psychiatry hour either. I'm just thinking that the possible effects of war on the fighters are very well documented these days and so is the use of gallows humour by people in the kinds of jobs in which they sometimes have to go eye-to-eye with death.

You've spoken about some of those things on the show even, and that's a good thing, and it makes sense that for guys in your line of work having an artistic outlet, no matter how crude or off-the-cuff, seems like a very healthy thing. I definitely didn't mean you should quit having people dying in your comics, if there's anything Shaun of The Dead and Hot Fuzz have taught us it's that portrayed the right way even death can be a laugh and a half.
