Happy Birthday Helvetica
50 years old today, or sometime this year at least.
A design classic. To some it might be dull, Swiss and too commonplace, but it gets the message across in a clear, clean and easily readable manner. And in its 35 or 45 "skinny" versions it can look real cool in headings etc. I wanted to write this message in Helvetica, but for some reason it's not available, so I went for Arial, a pale imitation. Have we actually had a typography thread on here before? Gill Sans is my second favourite. Any mention of C***c S**s, or fucking Mistral, will not be tolerated. |

I have so many favorite fonts. I guess it depends on the application. Unfortunately for web designers we only have a handfull of choices due to font availabilities on the user's pc. So more often than not we have Georgia for headings and Verdana for copy content. Helvetica is pretty good, but I think it tracks-in to tightly with smaller text. One of my all-time favs is a font called Cloister. I would include an image of it, but its on my home computer. It is a serif font with a subtle amount of character that places it historically around the ealry 19th century. Cool thread jwdd27.
*UPDATE* -- image attached of Cloister Font ![]() -Peesch

While in NYC for Keet's birthday the lady and I stopped by MOMA. They had a pretty cool exhibit on Helvetica there...so, if you're in NY, check it out.
For what it's worth, I hate it when people here at work use bubble mcfuckerson, er, I mean Comic Sans and say, "Well now this looks cool." NO...it does not. IT LOOKS LIKE A SIXTH GRADER MADE IT! Ugh. For a while in college I liked Century Schoolbook because it looked normal but was big and made my papers look longer. |

My favorite font to write in (not for headings, etc.) has to be Garamond.
It's classy, it looks nice blown up (like so) , and it is easy to read in large groups (i.e. paragraphs). I make my kids type things in either Garamond or Helvetica/Arial. And I will not let them type in Comic Sans. I hate that font. /shudder Last edited by Cubby; 05-09-2007 at 01:47 PM. |

Tahoma is useful for training and process documents, or any work doc that needs to look professional. It smooths them off and makes them look professional and well proportioned.
Tahoma, Garamond, Verdana. In that order Arial is for lazy cunts |

Trebuchet, Verdana, Georgia... pah!
I was talking about PROPER fonts, not MS standard issue ones. Like the Helvetica 35 I mentioned earlier: http://www.myfonts.com/fonts/linotyp...etica-35-thin/ Garamond's quite nice but I always liked Palatino as a serif font. rajjy, you like C***c S**s because you are infantile. And a cunt. |
