I suffer from a panic disorder and have panic attacks that last for a week at a time, age really doesn't matter, I'm 26 and have had them almost all my life. You either get meds for them or you just learn to deal with them, which is what I did. Was it something specific that brought it on?

I don't know, I thought it was because I was a heavy drinker? and use drinking to go to sleep so my brain can shut down

Yes it happens, panic attacks come at any age. And if you were a heavy drinker you probably had some demons of your own (i was a heavy drinker too, once. also heavily on drugs. and panic attacks happened very often and still do now that i'm pretty much clean).
If it happens again (maybe you had it just because you're under stress?) se a psychologist/therapist (NOT a psychiatrist) and try to sort things out. Avoid meds if you can, because they will almost surely become an addiction. Believe me, i've been through bad shit.It seems scary but you can get out of it, and most of the times it's temporary. Dont worry. |

I often suffer from crippling panic attacks, which strike 50/50 midday and in the middle of the night. I've been having them since I was about 16, and haven't found that they increase/decrease with age, just with stress levels. If they become a common thing for you, I suggest looking into getting some Ativan ( or a little of the good green helps too ) to help calm you down when focused breathing or having someone you trust to talk to fall through.
Good luck! |

How active are you? Research has shown that thirty to sixty minutes of intense aerobic exercise per day can significantly reduce the incidence of panic attacks. Swimming laps is a great example of this. Heavy drinking is certainly a factor contributing to your panic attacks and cutting down on your intake (not stopping it completely) will go a long way to reducing the incidence of panic attacks. Ativan is only good as a short term measure to alleviate the symptoms of anxiety because in many patients the drug actually can increase adrenaline production and with your alcohol intake would probz worsen the symptoms. Cannabis use - sorry man but that's gonna fuck with your system big time if you're prone to panic attacks. I've seen far too many fucked up individuals come through my ER as a consequence of cannabis because they thought it would alleviate their anxiety attacks. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is what you need to be looking up if you're going to go the internet. Check out this link
MoodGYM: Welcome It's a world renowned therapy tool endorsed by mental health professionals which has been shown to greatly help sufferers of depressive and anxiety disorders. You can work through it at your own pace and come back to it whenever you like. It is almost pure CBT and I highly recommend it.

Yes, they are scary as all hell.
I had them bad a few years ago, then they got under control. Just in the past few months I've had them again. I won't take meds for it, it's not been offered anyway. I know where mine come from, if you can pinpoint a trigger, feel it starting, concentrate on your breathing and log it, see if you notice a pattern? I hear some people can get them as a result of coffee if you dink enough. As a dear friend told me during one (or two) breathe, slow, controlled. Hope you get some peace from them.
