Rest easy Chemda (or Aspartame wont kill ya)
That whole aspartame thing was bugging the hell out of me. I drink diet coke all the time. So I did some looking. I found sites that called aspartame the devil and said it will steal your children and sell them into canadian sex shops. I also found sites that said it was so good for you it gave angels orgasms. But the following came from the best source i could think of. The American Cancer Society, so I think I'll trust what THEY have to say. I'll paste it here, Link to follow:
"Does aspartame cause cancer? Aspartame is a low-calorie artificial sweetener that is about 200 times sweeter than sugar. Current evidence does not show any link between aspartame ingestion and increased cancer risk. People with the genetic disorder known as phenylketonuria should avoid aspartame in their diets." Whether or not you believe them, it makes ME feel better about the whole thing. http://www.cancer.org/docroot/PED/co...and_Cancer.asp |

The problem is of course, now we don't know who to believe, and will only find out if it causes cancer when we DIE OF IT.
I have decided to proceed with caution. Soda is for treats, not for all the time, just like my mum said. |

What does diet soda have to do with diabetes anyway? There's no sugar, that's the point. Please explain because I honestly don't see the connection. |

A friend had a brain tumor (successfully removed) and her doctor told her to never consume aspartame. Other artificial sweeteners are fine. That sold me on staying away from it ![]() |

It's true, everything in moderation, but I have a good friend who has Type 1 diabetes. 6'4" and 175 lbs. He has to stay away from caffeine because it can block the effectiveness of his insulin shots, but fake sugar isn't the problem when it comes to diabetes (as far as I know). |

One last time, maybe? Sugar is the problem in diabetes. Being overweight (plus genetic factors) is a leading cause of type 2 diabetes (which your friend doesn't have). The risk of diabetes (being overweight, drinking sugary drinks) is far greater than the risk from any of the artificial sweeteners. So if the choice is sugar or an artificial sweetener, any of them are a better choice. Among the artificial sweeteners, aspartame is one I try to avoid. But I'd eat a truckload of it before I drank a regular Coke. I lost 59 lbs., but I still have type 2 diabetes ("wore your pancreas out while you were fat", my doctor said). Sugared soda is, by far, one of the biggest problems causing obesity -- and therefore diabetes -- in this country! |
