Just wanted to tell the consequence Dr. Packer and I decided on for Diamond and Kiemariah (Diamond for chasing Kiemariah all over the school and Kiemariah for slapping Diamond) during transition back from lunch. We would like for them not to go down to lunch tomorrow. Dr. Packer asked that Aaron take his lunch at a different time in order to monitor them in the classroom where they will eat there lunch tomorrow. Both students and their parents have been informed of this already. If there is a problem with Aaron's break time changing, let Dr. Packer know. See you tomorrow.

I've been wanting to visit A few SDC classrooms at other schools for a while now and Dr. Packer has given permission for both you and I to leave for a half day in order to do so. You interested? Angie suggested Diane Feinstein and or McKinley (I guess Amarion's twin is doing well there and I'm curious to see that). Let me know if you're in and I'll set it up.

Also, I want to set up an in-school suspension for Dedrick tomorrow. I suggest that Dedrick sits separately from the class and does not participate in an privileges for the day. He should not eat lunch or play SAT with his peers in my opinion. He can eat lunch in the office if you would like. I think a part of this day should also be spent talking about his choices today and doing something to make up for it. I suggest that if he is not able to comply with this tomorrow that he will still be required to complete this in school suspension to a minimum standard. It could be just for a half day. Maybe just for the amount of time that he is out of class today? Let me know what you think and how I can help. I would also like to start a behavior contract with Derrick. We had one last year and it did seem to be motivating for him. I'm attaching a copy for you to look at. Instead of play time it could be reading Goosebumps with me. Let me know if this is okay with you and if so if there is anything you think I should change about the contract.

I just wanted to keep you up to date regarding Amarion Pugh and safety issues he is having at school:

2/2/09
Yesterday Amarion punched and kicked one of the paraprofessionals multiple times. As a result, it was necessary for him to be physically restrained on multiple occasions yesterday. In addition, he broke a glass thermometer in half and proceeded to play with the broken pieces of glass, offering a piece to one of his peers and encouraging them to play with the glass as well. Amarion refused to give the pieces of glass to an adult, putting one of them in his pocket. One of his peers ended up getting cut on one of the pieces of glass.

In addition, the problem of leaving the class without permission continues. Yesterday, Amarion spent much of the day wandering around the school without permission. This necessitates a 1:1 staff, taking away supervision that is needed for the other children. Amarion is verbally abusive, most of the time. Yesterday he screamed "fuck you" in Mr. [MY NAME]'s face repeatedly, disrupting the entire class. In addition, he called the principal a "faggot" and myself a "bitch" in front of the entire class. As a result of all of these behaviors Amarion earned a suspension of 1.5 days.

I will be scheduling a visit to McKinley's SDC in order to get some ideas of interventions from his twin brother's teacher and Dr. Packer has said that both [MY NAME] and myself can take a half day to do such a visit.

How is a student able to get a glass thermometer and then break it? Sounds like we need to seriously talk about safety concerns in the classroom. Students should not be able to wander around the school etc. I know we can't restrain him all day. We need to evaluate the class system. The general one in the classroom doesn't seem to be working for him.

PLEASE let me know how I can assist you in observing McKinley. Last I spoke to Jen Martin (teacher) she said that Wednesdays were best for her. Let me know when we can schedule a time with the classroom staff and re-evaluate the behavioral management plan of the class. If Amarion needs additional services (day tx?) we need to put some of these interventions in place first. PLEASE LET ME KNOW how I can better help. I know I haven't been there as much in the last two weeks, but I will drop everything and help make some of these changes if you all are on board. We have a solid teacher and paraprofessional staff-let's work it!

Amarion has been suspended 6.5 days. [MY NAME], please let me know if he is suspended again. We will have to do a manifestation determination.

We have not kept up with the SPED meeting (no fault to anyone, Tuesdays are always so hectic). Angie, perhaps we can set one up for the month of Feb. I'm thinking we should move the SPED meeting to afterschool so the SDC staff are able to attend as well. I know you have your placement meeting, I'm willing to come back on another day since it's only once a month. I think we can utilize this time to discuss specific students or classrooms as a whole and put our heads together to strategize on how to work with these kids. Hopefully, with the consistency of the meeting, we can be more proactive and not constantly get caught in this reactive mode. Let me know what you all think.
