I agree. I really had my reservations about that movie when I first watched it, mainly because I HATED that kid on Third Rock From the Sun, but I was pleasantly surprised that he could actually act (or should I say, overact, as the style of film required).

A German biopic centered around Manfred von Richtofen ("The Red Baron"), Germany's top flying ace during World War I.

If you're familiar with heavily-patriotic American films (the sweeping music, high praises to excellent soldiers, etc.), then this is the German version. The constant musical crescendos and the glorified ass-kissing ("You are a symbol of German superiority, defining courage, bravery, etc.") however gets exhausting and all I became interested in was dogfights and the nature of the air war and its pilots. Although, I will take some liberty with this as von Richtofen was more or less a hero to his nation, a kind of Audie Murphy for the German military. Down a top flying ace from the other side and it's spoken around the 'water cooler.'

What surprised me initially was the sheer gentlemanly-like behavior of the four (von Richtofen and friends); they appear as if they popped out of an Abercrombie & Fitch ad and visit the funerals of their opposing pilots to drop wreaths. von Richtofen is a Baron however (thus possibly explaining the extreme etiquette) and displays an alternative ideology as he is focused not on the killing of his opposition but purely the number, or score, of his kills ("We are sportsmen, not butchers."). As you will see when the film progresses though, he, albeit predictably, becomes more aggressive, wanting to strike fear into his opponents, losing that charming quality of the chase. In a bit of historical irony, a German general states, "My soldiers do not kill other men, they are simply destroying the enemy."

While the writing is weak and the acting stiff, the dogfights are a glorious thing to behold. While heavily CGI, they're beautiful and engaging. However, they are too short as making them drawn out would have cost an excessive amount (it is one of the most expensive films in German history with a budget of about $23m USD; a paltry amount for US studios, since this much is spent just on catering).

6/10

The Taking Of Pelham 123.

I never saw the original and I love anything that Denzel is in.

It was a good film, however I never quite felt the tension that they were portraying in the film. Also - I think Travolta was off his game in this. I mean he does the villan very well (Face Off, Broken Arrow) but...

It's like this...some people say "fuck" really well. It's verbose, it goes right through you, it can rattle your ancestors. Travolta is one of those people. However in this, his villan never gave me the satisfying "fuck" I was looking for.

Still...Tony Scott makes a bloody good film.

Dark Knight. I love the bit when it goes silent and he's riding around with his head hanging out of the cop car. Creates a much better sense of "there's nothing we can do" doom than Empire Strikes Back ever did. The fucker's pre-planned everything and he cares about nothing. And B-Man doesn't kill dudes. Rock, hard place, Arkham.

Terminator - Salvation, I think is the name?

They fail at not ending the movie with a Matrix cliffhanger. The 2 storys could be merged so easily.. Imagine the money they'd make
