Why do grandmas dye their hair blue?

Were they all a generation of punks?

It's from the plastic rain bonnets alot of them wear, something in the plastic leeches out in the rain and turns their white hair blue or purple.

Wikipedia says:

Quote:
A blue rinse is a dilute hair dye used to reduce the yellowed (or translucent, showing scalp colour) appearance of greying hair on older women. The ability to see blue decreases with age, so an older woman perceives her uncolored hair to have a yellow-tinge, and the blue rinse brings the color back to a perceived normal color in their eyes. The blue rinse supposedly makes yellow-white hair appear blue-white, but an inexpertly applied blue rinse will leave a distinctly unnatural tinge behind.

The phrase entered popular culture as a term for elderly women, the blue rinse brigade. An alternative term is "blue hair." It has declined in popularity with the increasing popularity of home dyeing, the reduced prevalence of smoking (which yellows the hair) and with society's more relaxed attitude to ageing.

Notable characters from British television series with blue rinse include Phyllis Pearce from soap opera Coronation Street and Mrs. Slocombe in sitcom Are You Being Served?.
But that's not cited so Rhian's Nana could have written it.

I don't know why old ladies dye their hair blue, but I do believe that the blue hair dye seeps into their brain and affects that part of the brain that votes.

Grandmas can get blue hair on accident too. Once my grandma left the blue rinse sitting on her hair too long and it turned fairly blue. I suggested we go buy some other colors and make it much more exciting but she opted to wait for the blue to fade, which was boring. And of course she was self conscious the whole time her hair was blue because she didn't want people to think that she was loosing her eyesight.
