Why isn't shit installing on my macbook? ANGER!

I saw that there was only 8 gigs of space left on my mabook. So I decided to delete safari because I had installed firefox. But I noticed the katg chat wasn't working on firefox WTF is up with that btw? And it has nothing to do wth java cause all of that shit is enabled. Well the chat works on safari so I tried to download safari again. But it won't install, it says I need 30mb of free space on my hard drive, but I have 20gigs. Then I tried to install VLC and it says the program has successfully been installed but when I try to open it no go. ANGRY FUMING POTATOE HELP!

SPE, first thing I would do is repair permissions. Second the chat is iffy with firefox for mac, I experience a lot of problems with it, so I use Safari for the chat, and Firefox for everything else.

Use spotlight to find a program called disk utility, once open select your hard drive, and click the first aid tab. Then click "Repair Disk Permissions."

I would restart your machine. You have dropped Safari and VLC into your applications folder correct? I am just making sure that you are not trying to run them in the dmg folder.
