What the heck is an M4A?

Do I need to get a converter thingy to change that to MP3?

M4A is AAC Audio. It works with iTunes and the iPod. I'll try posting an MP3 version soon.

hmmm--i tried to open it with itunes and couldnt, even after renaming it best.mp3--any ideas?

Renaming is an mp3 file won't work. The extension has to remain .m4a and it will work in iTunes.
