Even if you knew about electronics I can totally see how you'd think this is some kind of malicious prank. He said he put it in a box so it wouldn't look as "suspicious", I think he knew what he was doing, got called out on it, and made up the 'clock' lie to try and downplay what was probably just a stupid kid making something to show off to his friends

(Throw in a block of yellow play-dough with some wires going into it for bonus points.)

I can buy that. The school is still dumb for calling the police and having him arrested (That's what happened, right? I haven't been following the story).
