Idk about you guys but my heart broke listening to the act out phone call between Chemda Keith and Keith Mom.

I didn't sob like Danny but a few tears fell.

Omg I guarantee your mom has had a swallow study and they’ve told him multiple times to not feed her or give her water. He is literally torturing her.

Hospice is for people with an estimated life span of 6 months or less. If she hasn’t been able to talk-death is coming. God I bet the staff hates him.

I don’t think your dad has the money for a funeral. I think he spent it all on his $1000 walkers

The reality is it’s a sad situation. I had a few hours of sadness when my estranged dad died and I finally got the call. Not long after I found the obituary and… discovered I wasn’t in it.

Anyway. Those emails are doing 0 positive things and I think we can all agree that it’s par for the course, your dad isn’t changing, and that’s just how that’s going to play out.

In my Dad's last days they told his he could no longer eat as he was unable to swallow, combined with pneumonia, then kidney failure. He fought a lot, in his sleep etc, I was grateful I saw him shortly after he passed as he seemed at peace. The lunge was likely Keiths mom hallucinating FR Malley was nearby and she was trying to strangle him.

I follow a few elder care professionals on TikTok, and saw an interesting video last week about how the body needs to stop taking in liquids when it's close to death. Forcing hydration through an IV or even by mouth if the patient is unwilling is counterproductive to a peaceful death.

The good news about the morphine is that if they are okaying it’s for every hour, she’s not going to be in pain and if she was at all alert, this will help her not be alert as her body continues to shut down. In dementia the brain deteriorates and it is no longer able to inform the body to function as it is needed. In late stage dementia-the person’s consciousness has been long gone. Dementia is much harder on the loved ones than the person suffering from it. I wish her peace in her final days.

In all my 10 years in geriatric social work I’ve encountered a variety of assholes-Keith’s dad is one of the worst people-and I’ve had guys drink their wives Ensure that was supposed to be for keeping weight on due to cancer. If there is an actual he’ll that is where his dad is going.

My heart goes out to Keith during this time. Having to deal with it through the lens of his dad just sucks (to put it mildly). I can totally relate to the "what's the point?" position. Though not the same situation, I've been estranged from my mom for years and can't really say if I would go visit if there was some hospital time before she died. I don't even know if I'd go to the funeral. I feel like our chapter has already ended.

I voted that he did wait the 15 minutes with the potatoes. That whole letter was horrifying. Since he does like to make it seem he can perform miracles, it seemed to me like he would have totally just put the food there and waited for his healing powers to start working. The realization that he actually has no control over the situation must have been slow coming.

Hi, Keith,

I'm very familiar with hospice care and what your dad is saying is accurate with the end.

Sorry,

Amanda
