The key to dealing with brown bears or black bears is to carry a bell and ring it constantly, and have pepper spray on hand as a backup.

If there are grizzly bears in the area, you will know since their poop contains bells and smells like pepper.

That is correct. In fact, a small black bear is about as dangerous as a big dog. But a big dog can be pretty dangerous. Just don't get between them and their babies and you should be fine.
