Tomorrow (Nov 8 06) Mercury transverses the Sun.

I've always loved astronomy but living in a city I rarely get to see stars

Two years ago when Venus transversed the sun, I quickly put together a sun-projector in my daughter's bedroom using a pair of binoculars, some tape, a tripod, and a clip-board.

It took a few minutes to set-up but it let me watch Venus traversing the Sun. I remember waking my wife - she took a look and went right back to bed.

Four years prior, in the early hours before the sun rose, my wife and I sat on our city fire escape and into the the morning watched a spectacular Leonard Meteor shower.

Beautiful.

As a facebook group puts it nicely:

When I was your age, Pluto was a planet.

This is a group dedicated to the kids who were taught that Pluto was the 9th planet from the sun. Pluto, we salute you. (February 18, 1930 - August 24, 2006).

Return of the Leonids - Sunday, Nov. 19th, 2006

"We expect an outburst of more than 100 Leonids per hour," says Bill Cooke, the head of NASA's Meteoroid Environment Office in Huntsville, AL. This pales in comparison to the Leonid storms of 2001 and 2002, when sky watchers saw thousands of meteors. Even so, a hundred per hour would make the Leonids one of the best showers of 2006."

Details at:
http://science.nasa.gov/headlines/y2006/14nov_leonids.htm?list194261

2002 kicked ass! Even in bright New York you could see meteor after meteor streaming through the sky.
