It gets STOOPID expensive real quick. I really want to stick to $500 - D40 is right there. With extra cash I can get a SX100 for point and shoot + video. or another lens. damn! there I go again!

that's the last time i offer advice about anything. i hate all you spec nerds anyways. just put a damn camera in your hand and go with what feels right.

damn it.. that was advice right there.

Yes. More lenses... I have a 50mm 1.4D, a 70-300mm VRII f4.5-5.6, a 55-200mm f4-5.6, and a 18-135mm f3.5-5.6 for every day walking around. I REALLY want this -

Nikon AF-S 500mm VR Nikkor ED F/4G ED VR - $7,999.00

and this -

Nikon AF-S 18-200mm DX VR Zoom-Nikkor f/3.5-5.6G IF-ED - $759.95 (to replace the 18-135).

Too much frickin' money that my wife won't let me spend.

But now I'm totally confused. Do I listen to that last piece of advice or not? Are you giving it? If you are then I'll do it, but you seem to not know if you are or not.

You can't see the changes in the viewfinder?

I would go for a used Canon 30D and a used 50mm F/1.4. You could get them in perfect condition for $700.

the d40 is gimped. it's not a good choice if you're looking to expand.

given the intended usage you stated you're gonna want to buy more lenses and there's no reason to buy a camera that doesn't have full functionality with the lenses from the system it uses.

OK so the Rebel stock lens is shite.

Camera store near me also bundles Xti body with the 18-200 Sigma lens. Anybody know this lens? or any other longer lens for the Rebel? Upto 300mm if possible?
