Didn't they do this same experiment with a chimp about thirty years ago? I think I read about in it one of my sociology classes in college. I think the kid had issues afterwards. He grew up to believe that the parents liked the chimp more than they liked him, gave him a complex for years.

The monkey parents ended up cancelling the experiment...when they realized that the experiment on the monkey was as much of an experiment on their kid. The kid ended up picking up grunting sounds...and developed verbal language slowly.
It must have been a really mess when they took the chimp away. Imagine what that would be like to the kid...you've been raised since birth with a chimp as your brother...and then suddenly...no brother. The MIT recording experiment is actually pretty facinating. They'll have a complete record of everything that the kid uttered in the process of developing language...and will be able to model trends and algorythms across large spans of time... Plus our robot overlords will be able to talk to us real nice... |
