Animal altruism is well-documented, and I agree with you. I just believe it is nurture more than nature. I didn't even realize it was a poll question, I was just responding to the podcast as I was listening to it last night.

Ayelet Waldmen, Michael Chabon's wife, wrote an article that caused a huge stir when she expressed her belief that a parents relationship to their children should come second to the relationship with the spouse.
Here's a link to the article"Truly, Madly, Guiltily." Quote:
I think that the utter devotion a mother feels for her child is a biological imperative based on the evolutionary need to pass on the genetics to the next generation and maybe most women still feel that way but there needs to be a place for women who feel differently to express themselves without being accused of being "bad mothers".

You made me think of Medea (the greek mythologic character as portrayed in a greek tragedy). If i remember correctly, she murdered the children she had with a betraying husband, to destroy his heritage and punish him for having abbandoned her.
She wasnt portrayed as a negative character. On the contrary, she was a symbol of female passion. Most people who explain why back then a character like that could be portrayed acting that way without being villainous and shocking say that in the ancient times children were seen more as a tool for heritage than something to love. Lust and passion were more important and strong than maternal love. And kids werent as sacred as they are today. So, yeah, protecting children and loving them is a natural instinct but humans are a corrupted version of nature.... Has to be noted that back then pedophilia was kind of accepted too. So i wouldnt take decency for granted... |
