I have never been in a physical fight and it makes me feel like less of a man.

I almost get into fights on a daily basis. I always end up avoiding the situation because i'm usually on my way to or from work.

The cops don't have a huge handle on the homeless population here, so they tend to ride the city buses and hang out at the bus stations. I always get bugged for change, cigarettes or a phone call. I usually get into verbal fights.

After listening to this show, I want to go get into a fight, just to see how i would do.

if your going to get into a fight for the first time dont let it be against a schizopranic alcholic with noting to lose and a life time of food and shelter to gain from killing you #protip

I voted no in the poll because I've never been in a real fight. I am sixteen though so there's still time.

I've been in two half-fights where I just kind of threw the other person around and yeah, I suppose I won, but no punches were thrown and nobody left the half-fight with bruises.

And there was two occasions where I avoided a fight when I shouldn't have. Yeah it sucks. You feel like a right pussy for a while afterwards. But suppose you just got to forget about it and not make the same mistake again. I bet that getting punched feels better than the feeling you get after pussying out of a fight.

Girls' responses to this kind of thing are always like, "You did the right thing." or "What if he had a knife?" or like Kyle said, "What is Zeus shot a lightning bolt at your face or something? (I am paraphrasing a bit)". They just don't have that weird ego thing I suppose.

Ahh what do I know? Like I said, I'm only sixteen and still haven't been in a real fight.

"What if he had a knife?"
I always think: You call that a knife? This is a knife!

The only solution is public duelling as a more civilised way of dealing with disputes.

That's a good point. I'd rather a knife in the back than a knife in the face (or somewhere more realistic in the general front region).

Yeah, it could have been. But then Kyle & Newsy couldn't have known that either.

Wow, Kyle and Newsy, that story really got to me. It totally sucks that you had to go through that. Did this get reported to the police?

But I'm with Chemda, Angie and Bex - you did hold your dignity in my books. In New York crazy wins. AND if you fought, unprepared and with guitars and bags, it is doubtful it will end well. You pick your fights well. Pride be damned. His buddies may have been all around in the bushes.

Taking a stand has it's limits. The guy MAY have been armed. MAY have had back up. You have no weapon and no decent backup. Game over. For now.

A suggestion I have not heard yet - avoid walking under bridges in one of the highest crime areas in NYC with guitars and camera bags at 3 or 4 in the morning... chalk it up as a bad judgement, hold your head high and sing your fucking heart out. You rock at music.

When I was in the army, we were encouraged to fight if things started to get tense. It was a good stress relief and we all were looking forward to it. Basically, we would go behind the building, trade a few punches with some asshole and then move on and get over it. I've gotten my ass kicked a few times, but every time it's been worth it.

Regular people will do whatever they can to avoid a fight, so if you escalate the situation to show that YOU are the one dictating whether there will be a fight, you'll feel much better when they back down.

Getting a busted lip and losing a fight is still better than not standing up for yourself in the first place. At least you'll have a story to tell, and you'll respect yourself.
