I once stole, for an email sig I used to sport, the quote "Imitation is the sincerest form of being a thieving bastard" from Victor Lewis Smith, a now deceased British journalist (Evening Standard).

No, i just watched the first "louie episode a couple days ago (great, he makes the "Curb rip off" feeling i had at fist, go away by handling his material in his own way)

Maybe it just spoke to his soul.
It's interesting but i think it's more direced towards the absorbing influences.

To give a silly example Qurntin Tarantino is a Scene thief. In every movie he does there's scene moods, names taken from other movies and whole genres.

And it's accepted and lauded, for , i guess his ability to take the entertining part from his sponge-like cinematic memory add his dialogue and make cinematically valuable movies.

Now, do you think that Stand-Up has that possibility. Can a comedian take other comedian's styilings and turn 'em into something different?

Hedberg did it, he turned the deadpan one liners from steven wright and gave them a different edge of his own.

Do you think Cook did that? Just absorbed those specific concepts and re-worked them as his own? I'm not sure. Are you?

Can someone really quickly justify how stealing movies from the internet is ok, but joke thieving is not? Because the whole "the original owner gets to keep it" thing kind of doesn't work anymore, but I like movies.

Maybe for the same reason that Dr L Schlessinger will (disingenuously and despicably pretend to, otherwise she really is as dumb as she sounds) misunderstand that the use of certain term within one group does not sanction the use of that term by somebody outside it. Relative power, wealth and influence, that is.

I am not sure either. We finally agree!

PS I also don't think Steven Wright owned one-liners, and I wouldn't consider Hedberg "deadpan" per se. Like Hedberg said (I am possibly paraphrasing, or stealing the soul from him here), "If I made potato chips and put them in a can, people would say I was ripping off Pringles...But what if I put them in a bag?"

As someone who also has a hard time with some critically aclaimed movies, I also was really surprised how much I liked Casablanca. Good call, Keith.
