Yeah that's pretty close.

When they're sitting on the steps at the end, Leo says that to his partner before relaunching into the whole detective act. Pretending to be crazy again means they will go ahead with the lobotomy and he won't need to live with the knowledge that he killed his wife and she drowned their kids. - so he will die a hero in his own mind and not the monster he thinks he is.

That was the only part of that movie that made it good as the rest of it was pretty obvious. (maybe not the only part but it'd be in the top 3)
