I voted yes. I am so over the scrawny whiteboy hipster douche oeuvre that comprises Eisenberg and Cera's entire careers.

Yep, it's happening to me too. I was blaming my old iPod.

All from http://me.com

The functionality is available on iPhone 3gs too, but it is not free. You need a Mobile Me account. But with iPhone 4 you get the "Find My iPhone" feature for free...

Apple - MobileMe - Find your iPhone or iPad.

Welll acctuuuallly,

You sir are not wrong, but poorly informed. Find my iphone is snazzy and fun but only works until the thief turns off the phone and if he restores the phone to factory it goes away completely.

I know this because it happened to me.

Piece of advice for people that keep their lives on their phones and their laptops from a guy who's had both stolen:

Use apps like lastpass or 1password to manage your sensitive info like logins and notes, etc. They both allow you to remember one password, preferably a good one, and autofill different passwords for every site you use. It's less convenient than using the builtin password managers in the browser but man is it a lot less stressful when you're laptop goes missing.

Similarly 1password and lastpass have mobile apps that allow you to carry your passwords, etc around on your mobile phone and they've got good password schemes and syncing to make that stuff easy.

If you've got lots of files you want to protect, like a project you don't want to leak out truecrypt is an easy enough solution to making encrypted drives that are pretty bulletproof if you use a good password.

1Password
LastPass - Password Manager, Form Filler, Password Management
TrueCrypt - Free Open-Source On-The-Fly Disk Encryption Software for Windows 7/Vista/XP, Mac OS X and Linux

If anyone is interested in more detail in how to setup and sync this kind of thing PM and I'll be glad to show you.

I played with the feature when I got my iPhone4 and you're right. It has to be enabled on the phone, and doesn't work if they power off the phone. So if they do a hard reset, they disable the Find My iPhone thing, and you're SOL.

So I guess it's a race against time. If you can login and find the phone's position before it is reset, you can lock the phone and go find it. Again, as long as they don't turn it off then move it. Even if it's off, you at least have the last reported location.

My point was that, while all cell phones can be tracked by the carriers, at least Apple gives you (the user) the same, and more features.

Big brother knows where you are anyway if you have a cell phone. At least Apple gives their customers access to the same (sorta) feature that big brother has.
