a new casino opened in Philly a few months ago. no one really wanted it.. its in a sorta hip/up-and-coming neighborhood. what could have been a really nice area in a few years will undoubtedly become the next Atlantic City (aka a shit hole) instead.

shame..

You're mixing up the chain of events. Atlantic city was impoverished first and legalized gambling to revitalize it.

I'm not sure how you arrive at the conclusion that interracial children get the "best" that each race has to offer, as opposed to the worst or the average. Statistically, it works out to the average - except in the case of recessive genetic disorders that are linked to race, like sickle cell anemia, which are less common in interracial children. On the other hand, some sociological studies have said that interracial children tend to pickup the bad habits of both races.

People's skins evolved to help them survive best in their climate. If you live in the North and indoors, you get less sunlight. Your body needs sunlight to make Vitamin D. Getting too much sun (like a white person near the equator) you'll get health problems and birth defects (sunlight damages folic acid which can lead to spina bifida). Too little sun (a black person in a cold climate) and you'll get health problems (e.g. Rickets and some other diseases are thought to be linked to low Vitamin D). All these problems are reduced in modern society, though, since we get more vitamins in our diets than our ancestors did.

I looked up information on the Dominican Republic gambling scams, and there have been a lot of people who got scammed. Apparently, it's called "Progressive Roulette".

"Just returned from Secrets and want to warn all travelers to this beautiful resort that the Casino is not owned or operated by the resort. They have their own rules and when you catch them cheating, like I did, running to managment isn't going to help. PLEASE don't go inside. Period. I know the resort is boring at night, but find something else to do. If you walk in, some young lady will walk up to you a give a you a chip or two and then introduce you to Progressive Roulette. The American dealer will buddy up with you, tell you how to play, and then you have reached "the beginning of the end". You will be the "luckiest" player at the beginning, but you luck turns quickly (mostly becuase you weren't lucky to begin with since the dealer was lying about your score the whole time) I know two folks, in a three day period, who got suckered for $4000 plus, chasing those last 5 points needed to hit the jackpot"

"Do not gamble in any Dominican Republic Casino. I was conned and scammed in the Playa Chiquita Casino in Sosua. Since I returned to the U.S. I've done some investigating and heard stories of other people who were scammed in exactly the same way. The game I got scammed playing is called progressive roulette. I'm sure they change the name of the game to protect the guilty so, I'll describe it for you. It's a wooden circular device that eight little white balls are thrown into. There are many holes in the surface with different number values from 1 to 9 (I believe that was the correct range) that the balls, when thrown, fall into. This scam is very complex, keep reading...."

In 12 step communities there's a tendency to be insular and to believe that the only thing keeping a person sane is the meeting. And also to think that if a drunk leaves the meeting, he's not long for sanity or sobriety after that. I admit, I felt that a little when Jesse mentioned he hadn't been going to meetings.

I had a friend die awhile back, and the meetings did shit for him, he was going regular right up until he killed himself. And the community is so small that it felt kind of gross with everybody talking about it after the fact, trying to deal in their own way, I guess. In my experience, the meeting isn't a saving grace. It's more like a branch you can hit on the way down to slow your fall. If you're lucky, maybe you can use it to stop yourself.

Every few years I get fed up with all the bullshit, and I don't want to be in a fucking program anymore (not that I ever did) and I just want to be normal and live a regular life. But the only barometer for normalcy I've ever had was the fucking TV, and there's no basis in reality for that shit. So I go to my stupid meetings and I tell them how I don't want to be there and they all laugh and then I go home.

Eventually I come back around to looking forward to a meeting, and being happy and grateful to just be living. Times I've taken a break, I've noticed that I don't do so well.
